Sharif Marine Technology Co. (SMART) started studying marine fish farms in 2014 using the technical capabilities of specialists graduated from Sharif University of Technology. With the advancement of studies, in 2017 Sharif Marine Technology Co. began its official activity with the aim of producing indigenous marine fish farms. The company has developed software for designing fish cage structures and mooring systems based on standards and Iran shoreline conditions. Sharif Marine Technology Co., in collaboration with the National Marine Laboratory of Iran, has successfully tested cages designed according to different environmental conditions.

The decreasing pattern of rainfalls and increase of water usage in the recent years has resulted in shortage of fresh water throughout the region, which in turn has led to decrease in protein production and increase in the prices. Marine Fish culture which uses sea water is currently one of the best solutions to confront this problem.
Cage aquaculture is economically one of the best methods of fish culture in the world. The main reason is low permenant cost of cage culture projects in comparison to other methods like in-land culture, especially when the capacity is taken into consideration. On the other hand, there is no need for purification equipment which in turn reduces the operating costs. The higher level of minerals in sea water leads to lower FCR and decrease the feed cost for the fish culture. Although this method is inherently less expensive in comparison to other methods, the foreign cages are still much more expensive than the indigenously built samples. This is while the foreign companies mostly use Iranian made parts for the cages. Domestic production of fish cages drastically reduces the final costs of marine cage culture.
Cage culture offers a very good alternative to fishing. This method helps marine species to survive and prevents the destruction of their environment. With substitution of traditional methods of aquaculture with these modern methods the pollution of fresh water resources will be prevented. Generally, substitution of meat with fish will lead to reducing the CO2 release.
With increase of the world population the new nutritional resources should be considered. Scarcity of fresh water and farm lands means the sea is the best candidate to make up for the increasing nutritional needs. Exorbitant Fishing has led to many environmental problems. Cage culture seems to be the most feasible answer.
A large portion of coastal region of Iran are deprived regions. Cage culture projects can significantly help in pulling these parts of the country from the poverty trap.
